When Flavio was 13 years old, he began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the instruction of his older brother Ricardo. The brother’s father wanted them to train in Martial Arts in order to learn how to protect themselves and deal with any possible bullying. Ricardo began his training a year before Flavio and joined Gracie Barra where he trained under Master Carlos Gracie Jr. When Ricardo’s first year was finished, he convinced Flavio to join the kid’s program at Gracie Barra.

With Jiu-Jitsu being an individual contact sport, there is a high level of accountability on wins and losses. This level is attributed to how a person plays and how they play is a direct result of how much they’ve trained and retained from their coach and training partners.

When a person wins under those circumstances, that can be a huge confidence booster. Conversely, losing can sometimes be tough to take but it challenges you to take ownership, learn from your mistakes, and move on to meet the next challenge.

For the last 25 years, Flavio Almeida has been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and views himself as a student first. Meanwhile, Flavio instructs others, coaches them, and does most of his training in Phoenix while still traveling to teach, train, and compete on the global scale. Flavio believes that Jiu-Jitsu changes lives and he his driven to do for others what Jiu-Jitsu has done for him. Furthermore, Flavio believes that everyone can benefit from experiencing and practicing Jiu-Jitsu in the format that is the most appropriate for their current needs and aspirations.
